The Neurosciences Service Line recently received recertification for stroke, hip and knee replacement.

Neurosciences service line team representatives are shown with the stroke, hip and knee replacement recertification plaques. Representatives, front row, left to right, are George Flickinger, rehabilitation medicine; Brenda Chapman, stroke coordinator; and Alice Zepp, R.N., Tower 3. Back row, left to right, Lori Clark, neurosciences administrator; Michelle DeStefano, clinical director; Amy Gotwalt, R.N., Tower 3; July Gunther, nurse manager, Tower 3; and Missy Schneider, nurse educator, Tower 3. Lori Abel, musculoskeletal program director, was absent when the photo was taken.

The Joint Commission recertified all three programs after an intensive two-day, on-site visit in June.

An advanced practice nurse from the Joint Commission conducted the evaluations and awarded York Hospital the Gold Seal of Approval in program excellence for hip, stroke and knee replacement.

“This is really an impressive accomplishment which could only have been achieved through the incredible amount of hard work by so many people,” said Lori Clark, neurosciences administrator.

Michelle DeStefano, clinical director, said, “This accomplishment was truly a team effort that involved many different staff members who care for these patients.”

The Joint Commission reviewer interviewed nurses from Tower 3, OR, PACU, ED and MISCU.  Additionally, the reviewer talked to therapists, secretaries, physicians and directors.

The reviewer also looked at adherence to clinical guidelines/national standards, use of evidence-based practice, performance improvement, community service, staff education/competence and patient education.

“All of our staff members were able to speak to the key strategies of the programs that produce positive patient outcomes and high patient satisfaction,” said DeStefano.

“We are proud of every person who provides excellent care in so many ways to these patients every day,” she added.  “They have made this award possible.”
