Gettysburg Hospital is now offering a weekly farmer’s market on its campus. It’s a way to provide good nutrition options for its staff members as well as support the efforts of local food producers.
Held each Wednesday from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m., the farmer’s market in the hospital parking lot offers staff members, visitors and neighboring residents a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers, baked goods and a host of other items from local growers and producers.
Organized with the help of Healthy Adams County, the hospital’s weekly market is a benefit for staff members, visitors as well as for the food growers who represent the Adams County Farmers Market Association.
“This effort reflects the hospital’s goals of offering healthy nutrition options and looking at ways that we can actively support local food growers,” said Kathy Gaskin, executive director of Healthy Adams County.
The Adams County Farmers Market Association has established a scheduled rotation of food growers who will participate in the hospital’s weekly market. The market at the hospital supplements the group’s larger community markets held in the Gettysburg area each week.
“The hospital’s fresh food market is a great example of how we can partner with local employers to help support local food growers and provide healthy options for people,” said Kathy Glahn, president of the Adams County Farmers Market Association.
Hospital staff members are already enjoying both the healthy food options and the convenience the market offers. One impressive aspect of the market is the variety of items offered each week.
“I came away with potatoes, green beans and homemade dog treats,” said Tabetha Green, manager of performance improvement, Gettysburg Hospital.
“The vegetables will be part of dinner tonight, so I see myself coming to the market on a regular basis because it’s so convenient.”
