York Hospital named a 100 Top Hospital for the seventh time
Tuesday, March 07, 2006

York Hospital has been named a 100 Top Hospital by Solucient for the seventh time.

“We are very pleased to have received this designation once again,” said Dick Seim, president, York Hospital. “Our consistent performance, over the past 13 years since the 100 Top Hospitals award was initiated, places York Hospital among a very select group of hospitals in the country.

“Being named among the 100 Top Hospitals reflects our team achievement at providing effective and efficient care.

“All WellSpan staff members, physicians and volunteers should be proud of this significant recognition.”

The 100 Top Hospitals are selected based on their performance in four categories: quality, finances, operations and growth.

The 100 Top Hospitals have higher survival rates, keep more patients complication-free and attract more patients—all while maintaining higher profits, according to Solucient. Solucient is the leading source of health care business information. It compares hospitals within a class—based on size and teaching status—using nine measures.

“These 100 top hospitals react quicker to challenges than their peers and they focus on all aspects of care, not just one,” said Jean Chenoweth, Solucient’s executive director of the 100 Top Hospitals program.

“These hospitals are strong organizations that can perform across all areas: quality, safety, financial, efficiency and growth. The study measures organization-wide performance that touches every employee.”

According to Solucient, if all peer hospitals delivered the same level of care to Medicare inpatients as the 100 Top Hospitals:

An additional 100,000 more patients would survive each year.

Nearly 117,000 medical complications would be avoided.

The average hospital length of stay would decline by nearly half a day.

York Hospital is one of only four Pennsylvania hospitals to make the 100 Top Hospitals list this year. The others are: Hamot Medical Center in Erie, Lancaster General Hospital in Lancaster and Geisinger Medical Center in Danville.
