Almost half of all Americans (133 million people) currently live with at least one chronic health condition. Chronic conditions are defined as health concerns that are expected to last a year or more, limit what a person can do and/or require ongoing medical care. Examples of chronic conditions include diabetes, asthma, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. By 2020, as the population ages, the number affected will increase to 157 million.

Why should employers care about preventing and managing chronic diseases? Employers are the leading source of health insurance for Americans under age 65. People with chronic conditions represent all segments of our society – they are of all ages, races, and economic status. Many have multiple chronic conditions, including functional limitations and disabilities. Data show that:

  • In the general population, people with five or more chronic conditions have an average of almost 15 physician visits and fill over 50 prescriptions in a year.
  • Chronic conditions are responsible for seven out of ten deaths in the U.S. each year.
  • Chronic conditions limit the daily activities of more than one out of every ten Americans.

More than 70% of all health care costs generated in the U.S. are attributable to preventable risks and unhealthy choices. This means by focusing on prevention, healthier outcomes can be delivered at a much lower cost.  Healthier employees mean better productivity, less absenteeism and savings on health care expenses. Worksite wellness programs can create health awareness and get employees engaged in preventive screenings and activities that promote better health.
