Positive Parenting: Empowering Your Kids to Live Their Dreams

It’s a rough world out there for today’s teens. Millions of girls and boys are plagued by adolescent angst, self-doubt and low self-esteem. They are bombarded with images and media messages telling them who they should be. In today’s competitive culture, parents need to know how to effectively coach their kids to become confident, independent, happy, well-adjusted adults. Motivational speaker and confidence coach Kathleen Hassan will provide tools and strategies to help you prepare your children for life-long success.

Women’s Health Education Programs

Women and Exercise
  Tuesday, Sept. 15, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Exercise does not have to be a chore! This class will give you the latest recommendations and outline the benefits of exercise for women of all ages. Learn exercises for the heart, bones and muscles that are important for life-long physical and mental well being. Come dressed to participate in fun demonstrations that include strength training, Zumba, Yoga and Pilates.

Maybe…a baby:  A Pre-pregnancy Workshop
  Monday, Sept. 21, 7 to 9:15 p.m. or
  Monday, Dec. 14, 7 to 9:15 p.m.   
This workshop is designed for couples planning a pregnancy.  Topics will include getting your body ready for pregnancy, becoming pregnant, the transition from couplehood to parenthood, financial planning and the baby’s normal growth and development.

Tone Your Bones!  Safe Exercise Tips
  Tuesday, Sept. 29, 6:30 to 8 p.m.
This program is especially designed for those individuals who have been diagnosed with osteoporosis and will include a discussion about osteoporosis-safe exercises and body mechanics.  The class will conclude with a brief session on bone-health related topics including an osteoporosis overview, calcium supplements and nutrition, and medications update.

Is it Me or is She Having a Bad Hormone Day?
  Tuesday, Oct. 6 , 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Do you think she is losing her mind? Do you feel he does not understand what you are going through?  This program will give women and their partners a chance to increase their understanding of the normal physical and emotional changes that occur during perimenopause and post-menopause.

  Wednesday, Oct. 21, 6:30 to 8 p.m.
This interactive workshop is designed to teach teens and their parents how to recognize the warning signs of “toxic” relationships and how to develop the skills needed for healthy dating. Parents and their teens will engage in conversation and activities together and separately to help identify and understand what they should expect from any relationship and what they should not tolerate. Parents (or significant adults) are invited to bring their teens and join in this discussion.

Homemade and Healthy - Personal Food-related Gifts for the Holidays
  Tuesday, Nov. 3, 6:30 to 8 p.m.
The holidays can be a great time to promote health and prevent the dreaded holiday weight gain.  Taste some recipes and talk about gifts which support health during the holidays.  You might start a new holiday tradition!

Spine Health for Women:  Strategies to Decrease Back and Neck Pain
  Thursday, Nov. 12, 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Posture changes throughout a woman’s lifetime can cause problems with back and neck pain and range of motion.  This program will discuss how posture, footwear, daily activities and physical and psychological stressors can increase pain and stiffness.  Learn techniques to decrease and manage pain including exercise.  Participants should wear loose-fitting clothing and bring an exercise mat or towel and two tennis or golf balls. Attendees are also required to have a physician’s release to participate in the exercise portion of the program.

Preparing the Way for the Midlife Woman
WellSpan Midlife Services and York Hospital’s Women’s Heart Program offer personal screening and education services for women to support them through a positive midlife transition.  If you are 35 or older, learn what you can do to make this next phase of your life the best it can be. 

Each one-hour session includes:

  • A personal counseling session that provides information and risk evaluations regarding heart disease, osteoporosis, perimenopause/menopause and more
  • A non-fasting cholesterol screen
  • Heel screen for osteoporosis risk
  • A “Midlife Wellness” guide and packet of health information resources

Location: WellSpan Women’s Center, Suite 204, 35 Monument Rd. (Apple Hill Campus)
Cost: $30.  Schedule a shared appointment with your mother, sister or friend for a reduced fee of $25 per person.
