May is Women’s Health Month at WellSpan

At WellSpan Health, we understand that to be in the best position to take care of your family’s health, you need to find a way to take care of yourself.  We know your health as a woman needs special attention. As we dedicate this month to the health of the women in our community, we hope you will take advantage of our special programs and health screenings.

Special Events:

Women’s Check-up Day
  Monday, May 17 - 3 to 8 p.m.
Location: WellSpan Women’s Center, 35 Monument Rd. (on the Apple Hill Health Campus)
Cost: $10
10 for $10 – Take this opportunity to take care of yourself and get screened for the following important health risks:

  • Heart risk – includes non-fasting cholesterol screen
  • Blood pressure check
  • Heel screen for osteoporosis risk
  • Cancer risk and information – breast, gynecologic, colon and skin cancers
  • Depression screenGrip strength screening
  • Stroke risk screening
  • Body fat analysisPulmonary function testing
  • Diabetes risk - paper assessment only 

Chair massages will beavailable and limited to four people per hour.  Massages will be scheduled on a first-come, first-serve basis upon registration for the Women’s Check-up Day.

All participants will also receive a packet of women’s health resources.

Pelvic Floor Support Problems:  Pessaries and Beyond
 Tuesday, May 11 - 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Pelvic organ prolapse is a common problem for women after childbirth or with normal aging. This program will provide information about the causes, symptoms, less invasive treatments such as pessaries, and prevention strategies.

Perimenopause:  Are You There Yet?
  Thursday, June 3 - 6:30 to 8 p.m.
This program will provide an overview of perimenopause/menopause and focus on the latest information regarding coping with symptoms and staying healthy through menopause and beyond.

“…But I Love Him!”
  Wednesday, June 16 - 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Designed for teens and their parents, this program will teach both how to recognize the warning signs of toxic relationships and how to develop the skills needed for healthy dating. Parents (or significant adults) and their teens are welcome.

Maybe…A Baby:  A Pre-pregnancy Workshop
  Monday, July 12 - 7 to 9:15 p.m.
This workshop is designed for couples planning a pregnancy.  Topics will include getting your body ready for pregnancy, becoming pregnant, the transition from couplehood to parenthood, financial planning and the baby’s normal growth and development.

Body Image and Self-Esteem “Check-Up” for Girls
  Tuesday, Aug. 10 - 6:30 to 8 p.m.
This program will provide girls ages 11- 15 with positive messages and strategies to cope with the stresses of this stage of life. Girls are invited to attend along with a parent or significant adult.

It will be here before you know it….or is it here already? Preparing the Way for the Midlife Woman
WellSpan Midlife Services and York Hospital’s Women’s Heart Program offer personal screening and education services for women to support them through a positive midlife transition.  If you are 35 or older, learn what you can do to make this next phase of your life the best it can be. 

Each one-hour session includes:

  • A personal counseling sessions that provides information and risk evaluations regarding heart disease, osteoporosis, perimenopause/menopause and more
  • A non-fasting cholesterol screen
  • Heel screen for osteoporosis risk
  • A “Midlife Wellness” guide and packet of health information resources

Location: WellSpan Women’s Center, 35 Monument Rd., Suite 204  (on the Apple Hill Health Campus)
Cost: $30; schedule a shared appointment with your mother, sister or friend for a reduced fee of $25 per person.

Planned Cesarean Series
  July 29, Sept. 30 or Dec. 9
This class will discuss pre-operative routine, operative procedure, anesthesia and pain control as well as postpartum and recovery for parents who will be experiencing a planned cesarean. A Baby Care Class, Breastfeeding Class and Mother/Infant Center tour are included with this series. Second-time parents can take this class individually.  
Cost: $40 per couple

Safe Sitter® Course
This class teaches safe and nurturing child care techniques, behavior management skills, and appropriate responses to medical emergencies for boys and girls ages 11 to 13.

Orthopalooza
  Saturday, May 22 - Noon to 5 p.m.
Meet our orthopedic surgeons, athletic trainers and rehabilitation therapists while participating in a variety of activities and presentations.  There will be food and fun, family friendly activities for kids and adults.  The day will conclude with a celebrity softball game starting at 3 p.m.
